ISO 50001 – Energy Management

* ENAC accredited service.

The application of ISO 50001 in companies, which certify their Energy Management System (EMS), means improving their energy efficiency, which will be transformed into cost savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

The ISO 50001 standard provides a framework for organisations to achieve:

  • Develop a policy to follow for more efficient energy use.
  • Set targets to meet the policy.
  • How to use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use.
  • Measuring results.
  • Review how well the plan is working.
  • Continuously improve energy management.

This standard can be applied to all types of organisations, public and private, and of all sizes and activities, regardless of whether you are an energy producer, consumer or both.

This standard is fully compatible with:

  • ISO 9001 – Quality Management.
  • ISO 14001 – Environmental Management.
  • EMAS Regulation – Environmental Management.
  • Verification of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading.
  • Carbon Footprint.
  • Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Reductions.

Advantages of ISO 50001 certification

ISO 50001 certification brings a number of advantages for organisations:

  • Organisations that certify their EMS will be positively valued in public procurement, as indicated in the current Energy Saving and Efficiency Plan.
  • It implies a reduction of direct and indirect emissions of Greenhouse Gases, which cause Climate Change.
  • Demonstrates the organisation’s legal compliance in energy matters.
  • Integrates economic and environmental interests.
  • Improves competitiveness and image.
  • Demonstrates to customers a demonstrable commitment to energy management.
  • Provides a competitive advantage in the eyes of public administrations and energy suppliers.
  • Significantly improves cost control: energy conservation.
  • Direct impact on the improvement of the organisation’s energy performance.

ISO 50001 certification process

To obtain the Energy Management Certification of your organisation by EQA, you will need to follow the following steps:

  1. Implement the ISO 50001 standard.
  2. Apply to EQA for certification of your energy management system.
  3. EQA will request sufficient information for analysis prior to planning the on-site audit at your premises. In this certification audit, carried out by our audit team in an independent and rigorous manner, a report will be drawn up at the end of the audit, reflecting any deviations from the reference standard.
  4. If the deviations so require, they must be corrected by providing corrective actions and their evidence.
  5. Once the deviations have been closed, the file is processed by the EQA Certification Committee, resulting in the issue of the Energy Management Certificate, which is valid for three years.
  6. Annual follow-up audits are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the energy management system.

The maintenance of the certificate involves the following process:

  1. Annual monitoring 1.
  2. Annual monitoring 2.
  3. Recertification.

  2. Conduct an Energy Review to determine the organisation’s energy performance based on data and other information, aimed at identifying opportunities for improvement.
  3. Establish the energy baseline as a quantitative reference that provides the basis for comparison of energy performance for a specified period.
  4. Identify and enforce legal and other subscribed requirements related to energy aspects.
  5. Set demanding but achievable quantified objectives and targets.
  6. Encourage energy planning to improve performance throughout the product or service life cycle and control of operations, including purchasing and maintenance policies.
