Zero Waste

Reducing waste generation is one of the challenges of the circular economy. The aim of the circular economy model is to invert the current pyramid of waste management, promoting waste prevention, reuse and recovery actions, and encouraging actions so that each waste generated in one process can be used as raw material for another.

The ‘Zero Waste’ verification, framed within the EU’s circular economy strategy, is aimed at organisations that include in their strategy actions to reduce waste generation, and will consider the European waste hierarchy. It does not imply the non-generation of waste, but the incorporation of actions that prevent its generation, favour its reuse, facilitate its recycling and, if necessary, allow its energy recovery. All these actions will avoid the deposit of the waste generated in landfills.

The ‘Zero Waste’ certificate will be applicable to any organisation, with the requirements varying according to its activity, differentiating between manufacturing or service organisations, and with or without product design.

Advantages of Zero Waste verification

Zero Waste verification will bring to the organisation:

  • Image of a sustainable company, committed to the environment. It implements the principles of Circular Economy based on the reduction of waste generation and the most efficient search for final destinations for waste.
  • It will make it possible to anticipate legal requirements that will be published in terms of the environment and the circular economy.
  • Improvement in economic costs, by reducing waste generation and therefore waste management costs.
  • Obtaining income through the management of recoverable materials, which can be incorporated as raw material for another process.
  • Possibility of integration with the certification of environmental management systems according to ISO 14001 or EMAS regulations, adding value to the management of waste generated by the organisation.
